39 Million Passengers Traveled in Mexico During 2023

The Ministry of Tourism (SECTUR) reported that over 39 million passengers flew nationally and internationally in the first four months of 2023. Miguel Torruco Marqués, Minister of Tourism, announced that 20.07 million passengers were transported through domestic flights, which represents an increase of 20.5% against the same period in 2022. This figure also surpasses pre-pandemic numbers, with 16.4 million passengers transported during the same period in 2019, explained SECTUR via a press release. 

Torruco added that 19.1 million passengers flew internationally, which is 19.1% more than in 2022 and exceeds the passengers transported in the first four months of 2019 by 10.5%. The minister also highlighted that between January and April 2023, North America accounted for 85.3% of the passengers flying internationally.

The airlines with the highest activity regarding domestic flights were Volaris and Viva Aerobus, which together transported 14.3 million passengers, representing a 17.1% increase compared to the first four months of 2022 and a 74.3% increase compared to the same period in 2019. The Top 5 airlines with the highest number of passengers regarding domestic flights between January and April 2023 were Volaris, Viva Aerobus, Aeroméxico, Aeroméxico Connect and TAR Aerolíneas, accounting for a market share of 99.3%. 

US airlines with the highest passenger flow in the first four months of 2023 were American Airlines and United Airlines, which transported 4.5 million passengers, which represents a 14.3% increase compared to the same period in 2022 and a 40.2% increase compared to 2019.

North America accounted for 85.3% of the total international flights and the US transported 9.5 million passengers, a 9.4% increase compared to January-April 2022.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported that passenger traffic increased in April, indicating a positive trend for the aviation industry that was forecasted since January 2023. In April 2023, total traffic increased by 45.8% compared to April 2022 and globally, traffic has reached 90.5% of pre-COVID-19 levels. 

The industry load factor stood at 81.3%, 1.8% below pre-pandemic levels, while domestic traffic rose 42.6% compared to the same period last year, fully recovering and even surpassing previous figures from April 2019 with a 2.9 % increase, as reported by MBN.
