Grupo Aeroméxico plans to increase its connectivity with Spain by 9% in 1H26, driven by the launch of new long-haul routes and higher frequencies on existing services, company executives said at the FITUR international tourism fair in Madrid.
Giancarlo Mulinelli, senior vice president of global sales, Grupo Aeroméxico, said the airline will operate 71 weekly flights between Mexico and Spain during the summer season. “By the summer, we will have 71 flights between the two countries,” Mulinelli said.
As part of that expansion, Aeroméxico will launch a new Mexico City–Barcelona route in March, operating six weekly frequencies. The service will make Barcelona the airline’s second destination in Spain, after Madrid, and its sixth destination in Europe. According to Mulinelli, the new route responds to sustained demand for transatlantic travel and supports Aeroméxico’s broader plan to strengthen its European network.
In addition, the airline will open a Monterrey–Paris route in April with three weekly frequencies. Mulinelli said the new service will reinforce Monterrey’s role as a long-haul gateway. “This consolidates Monterrey as a platform for long-haul flights to Europe and Asia,” he said.
With the addition of the Barcelona and Paris routes along with frequency increases on existing services, Aeroméxico expects to operate 71 weekly flights to Europe during the summer. The expansion represents a 9% increase in operations and a 10% increase in seat capacity compared with the previous period, the company said.
Aeroméxico’s announcement came during the 64th edition of FITUR, one of Europe’s largest tourism trade fairs. The airline’s growth plans align with Mexico’s broader tourism and connectivity strategy, which government officials also highlighted at the event.
Mexico’s tourism secretary, Josefina Rodríguez Zamora, said the country is positioning itself internationally through improved air connectivity and infrastructure projects. “Mexico arrives at FITUR with a tourism policy based on connectivity, innovation, territorial integration and international cooperation,” Rodríguez Zamora said.
She added that southeastern Mexico is emerging as a priority region for tourism development. “The southeast of the country is becoming a strategic region to attract cultural and nature tourism,” she said. Rodríguez Zamora also pointed to the digital sale of tickets for the Tren Maya rail project as a competitive advantage in the European market. “The digital sale of Tren Maya tickets positions us in a highly competitive market, and strengthening flights to Europe responds to projected demand in the coming years,” she said.
During FITUR, Rodríguez Zamora assumed the rotating presidency of the Mundo Maya Organization for the 2026–2028 period. She also announced the launch of digital ticket sales for the Tren Maya through FlixBus, a European transportation platform. The initiative aims to improve access for international travelers and integrate rail and air connectivity as part of Mexico’s tourism offering.
