Airports Council International (ACI) ranked Mexico City International Airport (AICM) in 17th place in passenger traffic and aircraft movements in the World Airport Traffic Dataset for 2021.

“2021 represents the beginning of the aviation industry’s recovery. While some of the perennial busiest airport leaders have re-joined upper ranks, other regions struggle to recover leading to new entrants in the top 20. With many countries taking steps towards the return of a certain normality, lifting almost all the health measures and travel restrictions as supported by science, we welcome the continuation of air travel demand’s recovery in 2022, despite certain headwinds,” said Luis Felipe de Oliveira, Director General, ACI World, via a press release.

Airports around the world accommodated 4.6 billion passengers in 2021, a 28.3 percent increase in comparison from 2020. However, results also highlight a drop of 49.5 percent from 2019 results. ACI presented through its World Airport Traffic Dataset that the world’s top 20 airports represented 19 percent of global traffic (863 million passengers), on what represents a gain of 42.9 percent from 2020 and a drop of 31.9 percent in comparison to 2019.

AICM ranked 17th among the world’s busiest airports in passenger traffic in 2021, climbing from 2020’s 25th place. AICM increased its passenger traffic by 64 percent, counting a total of 36.06 million passengers in 2021.

In 2021, the world saw a total of 74 million aircraft movements, an 18.7 percent gain in comparison to 2020. The top 20 airports also represented a major fraction of movement, with 12 percent of global traffic. Mexico City also ranked in 17th place in aircraft movements, climbing from 2020’s 31th place to register 327,889 movements in 2021, a 37 percent increase.

The World Airport Traffic Dataset acquires data to adequately comprise a statistics dataset that features airport traffic for 2,600 airports in more than 180 countries and territories. The dataset is the most comprehensive airport statistics one in the entire aerospace industry. It provides a general view of air transport demand across the world’s airports in three major areas: passengers (international and domestic), air cargo (freight and mail) and aircraft movements (air transport movements and general aviation).
