The Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) is slated to receive MX$744.6 million in 2026, according to the Federal Expenditure Budget Project (PPEF). The funding is intended to support AIFA’s goal of becoming an international air traffic hub and maintaining growth above the national average.

In the first half of 2025, AIFA reported MX$414 million in revenues, with 85%–90% of travelers using the airport for domestic flights.

Juan Carlos Machorro, aviation specialist and partner, Santamarina & Steta, told A21 that AIFA still faces structural challenges that limit its competitiveness. These include insufficient ground transportation, high operational costs, limited connectivity, and low airline and passenger interest.

“There is little evidence this situation will change,” Machorro said. “It is also unclear why funding continues at this level when the airport reportedly reached breakeven and operational viability.”

Machorro noted that AIFA’s growth has been largely driven by restrictions at Mexico City International Airport (AICM), rather than the airport’s own competitiveness.

AIFA aims to serve 20 million passengers within five years, but Machorro said this target is unlikely without significant improvements in connectivity and services. He also questioned the airport’s long-term role in Mexico’s broader aviation network. “Even at full capacity, it is uncertain whether AIFA can meet projected demand through 2030,” he added.
