During 2019, domestic and foreign airlines in Mexico transported 101.3 million passengers, an increase of 5.2 percent compared to the previous year, according the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT). Mexico’s aviation passenger numbers have more than doubled in 10 years and have now reached 105 consecutive months of growth.

Last year there was a slight slowdown in total passenger numbers, after increases of 7.5 percent in 2018 and 10.3 percent in 2017.

In the domestic market, the nine national companies (led by the low cost Volaris) added 53.6 million customers during 2019, an increase of 8.1 percent. Mexico’s six international airlines transported an extra 16.4 million passengers and grew 9.1 percent.

Volaris (19.8 percent) and Viva Aerobus (19.9 percent) were the domestic companies with the highest growth in passenger numbers, providing transport to 20.4 and 11.3 million passengers respectively. Even the troubled Interjet, which was rumored to be merging with Viva Aerobus earlier this week, had positive results. Interjet saw passenger figures grow 10.3 percent compared to 2018, with 15.3 million passengers using the company.

Meanwhile, Grupo Aeroméxico (Aeroméxico and Aeroméxico Connect) saw a 5.5 percent reduction in its passenger numbers last year, caused in the main by the grounding since March of six 737 MAX airplanes for safety reasons.

Foreign airlines had a 1.2 percent reduction in passenger numbers in 2019. Last year US companies, which represent 66 percent of international flights in Mexico, saw figures drop 3.2 percent.
