In the second edition of the Air Transport Competitiveness Index, the Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association’s (ALTA) praised Mexico’s superior connectivity, accessibility and air transport policies.

Air passenger traffic fell by over 90 percent between March and April 2020 in Latin America and the Caribbean, according to the index. The aerospace sector was one of the most affected, as the pandemic led to numerous border closures and flight cancellations that severely harmed the industry. However, the region is making a turn around. “Now that the world is beginning to reconfigure itself, it is necessary to have the tools that lay the foundations for this path,” reads ALTA’s Air Transport Competitiveness Index.

The index “studies the competitiveness of the region and what actions can be taken to generate more attractive conditions to attract investment, as well as facilitate the arrival of tourism in the region of the world with the best rates of recovery of pre-pandemic passengers,” said ALTA.

Amadeus intelligence presented data through the Amadeus Demand360® tool, which showed that passenger flow finally surpassed 2019’s levels in September 2022, with traffic in North America reaching 96 percent. Mexico was one of the countries that exceeded its 2019 levels in international passengers by 19 percent. The Dominican Republic registered an excess of 24 percent from the same period and Colombia of 13 percent. Vital components that have allowed for a recovery include improvements in costs, requirements, prices and accessibility.

“Among the conclusions of the competitiveness index, the three most competitive countries turned out to be Mexico, Brazil and Panama. Mexico stands out for its high level of connectivity and its air transport policy, as well as the markets that a Mexican citizen can access without the need for a Visa,” explained ALTA.

The Air Transport Competitiveness Index in Latin America and the Caribbean 2022 monitors the region’s aviation industry. ALTA and Amadeus explained that the index is vital due to the importance of the aviation industry for the economic and social development of Latin America and the Caribbean.
