American Airlines plans to reconfigure 30 aircraft to introduce Premium Business Class seating by 2029. According to Quartz, a round-trip flight from Chicago to London in this new class is priced at approximately US$5,361. This investment in premium seating comes amid tariff uncertainty and rising airline ticket prices.
The first aircraft to feature the new "Flagship Suite" will be a Boeing 787-9, with all future Airbus deliveries incorporating the updated design. The airline will also retrofit existing Boeing 777-300ERs. The goal is to implement the new configuration across 30 jets by 2029, while increasing premium economy seating to 50%.
The Flagship Suites will debut in regular service on Jun. 5. Each suite features sliding doors for privacy, additional storage, a wireless charging pad, priority check-in, access to American’s Flagship Lounge, premium baggage handling, and in-flight perks such as multi-course meals with premium wine pairings.
The aviation industry is increasingly prioritizing premium business-class products over traditional first-class options. Delta offers the Delta One Suite, JetBlue has its Mint Suite, and United Airlines is expected to launch its own premium offering soon.
Major US carriers are focused on boosting sales of higher-priced seats. According to the Los Angeles Times, the pandemic spurred a shift from consumer spending on goods to premium travel experiences, with more passengers willing to pay for enhanced comfort and service.
This move toward pricier tickets aligns with broader industry trends, as low-cost carriers face rising costs due to supply chain disruptions, aircraft delays, and reduced demand from economic uncertainty and tariffs.
