American Airlines aims to become the world’s leading airline in terms of supersonic flights, as the US-based company announced major investments towards expanding its supersonic fleet.

“American Airlines and Boom Supersonic today announced the airline’s agreement to purchase up to 20 Overture aircraft, with an option for an additional 40. American has paid a non-refundable deposit on the initial 20 aircraft. Overture is expected to carry passengers at twice the speed of today’s fastest commercial aircraft,” explained American Airlines via its newsroom.

Boom Supersonic’s Overture provides major speed advantages for the company’s fleet, which is already considered the simplest, youngest and most efficient in the US. Boom Supersonic also agreed to comply with all industry-standard operating, performance and safety requirements. American Airlines also specified that the agreement between companies reached a vital accord that would have Boom comply with the airline’s customary conditions before any type of delivery.

“Looking to the future, supersonic travel will be an important part of our ability to deliver for our customers. We are excited about how Boom will shape the future of travel both for our company and our customers,” said Derek Kerr, Chief Financial Officer, American Airlines.

The Supersonic Overture Aircraft can carry between 65 and 80 passengers at Mach 1.7 over water with a range of 4,250 nautical miles, which is twice as fast as the world’s fastest commercial aircraft. The aircraft is designed to optimize speed, safety and sustainability, while also allowing the Boom to fly more than 600 routes around the world in half the usual time. American Airlines explained that a flight from Miami to London could take place in just under five hours and a flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu in three hours.

“We are proud to share our vision of a more connected and sustainable world with American Airlines. We believe Overture can help American deepen its competitive advantage on network, loyalty and overall airline preference through the paradigm-changing benefits of cutting travel times in half,” said Blake Scholl, Founder and CEO, Boom Supersonic.

Jose Freig, International President, American Airlines, explained earlier this year that the airline reported major growth in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2021. Mexico and Colombia saw an unprecedented rise in demand, as reported by MBN
