The aerospace industry in Mexico has thrived in certain states like Queretaro, Guanajuato, Nuevo Leon, Baja California, Sonora and Chihuahua. The latest breakthrough in the country’s aerospace race is the creation of the Defense and Aeronautics Aerospace Cluster by the Bajio Alliance.

Queretaro is one of Mexico’s aerospace powerhouses, being the fourth-biggest contributor to the industry in the country. Ever since the pandemic hit, this industry was one of the most affected, delaying some of the plans that the state had. However, plans have been put back in motion over the past months, as mentioned in a previous MBN article. Through the Bajio Alliance, formed by Guanajuato, Jalisco, Aguascalientes, San Luis Potosi and Queretaro, a route map was defined to integrate the country’s first aerospace, aeronautical and defense cluster, according to El Economista. The goal of this initiative is creating synergies between these regions and collaborating with the Guanajuato headquarters. As mentioned before by MBN, the state has also been looking to add value to its aerospace sector and to invest in its manufacturing capabilities.

The Bajio Alliance and the newly created cluster have gained an increased relevance following the COVID-19 pandemic when it became clear that for the Mexican aerospace industry to reach a certain level of relevance and competitiveness, states cannot work on their own, Antonio Velázquez Solís, Director of the Queretaro Aerocluster, told El Economista. By bringing the whole alliance together, there would be a total of 68 aerospace companies in the cluster, most of them located in Queretaro, as well as startups, entrepreneurship projects, academia, and government, mentioned El Economista

The academic sector is fundamental in the success of this newly created body. During the Forum for the Presentation of the Strategic Agenda of the Automotive Sector, one of the objectives highlighted was to establish strategies and generate guidelines for developing and promoting the aerospace industry through better education programs. "By strengthening educational quality and relevance in favor of a new professional profile, young people can be inserted into the productive sector," Raúl Silva Perezchica, General Director of the Aguascalientes Education Institute, said in an LJA piece. "This is an industry that requires high technical knowledge. By joining efforts, states will become more competitive," Antonio Bravo Álvarez, Executive Director of FAMEX, told MBN.

The Guanajuato state government has said the Defense and Aeronautics Aerospace Cluster will help in the transformation of the aerospace sector, replicating the integration model of the various clusters in the state that have benefited from local supply chain growth.
