Best-Performing Airlines for Punctuality in 2023

Cirium's analysis for 2023 crowned Avianca Airlines, member of the Star Alliance network, as the unrivaled leader for on-time performance worldwide, with an 85.73% on-time arrival rate across 213,039 flights.

While Avianca secured the global accolade, Copa Airlines earned recognition as South America's frontrunner, diversifying the list of winners. The excellence in on-time performance spanned continents, honoring ANA in Asia, Delta in North America, Iberia Express in Europe, and Oman Air in the Middle East and Africa.

Delta and American Airlines maintained commendable performance despite managing significantly larger flight volumes, showcasing a commitment to punctuality amidst increased operational demands.

"Despite the challenges, the leading airlines managed to finish the year with impressive on-time performance metrics," remarked David White, senior director of advanced initiatives at Cirium in a statement regarding the resilience of the airline industry in 2023 despite pandemic challenges.

The report celebrated the achievements of low-cost carriers like Safair, Azul, Hong Kong Express, JetStar Japan, and Iberia Express. These carriers, navigating within larger competition, garnered recognition for their punctuality.

Acknowledging that delays are not solely attributed to airlines, the report emphasized multifaceted factors such as weather patterns, airport traffic, and staffing issues influencing flight punctuality, providing a broader perspective on operational challenges.

Beyond airlines, airports also received acknowledgment. Minneapolis-St Paul (MSP) was globally lauded for its exceptional punctuality in departures. Osaka International (ITM) and Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO) were recognized as leading airports in their respective categories, highlighting the importance of timely operations across different airport sizes.

Latin America witnessed remarkable on-time performance from leading airlines in 2023. Copa Airlines (CM) was the top performer with an 89.46% on-time arrival rate out of 115,657 flights, followed by Avianca Airlines (AV), showcasing robust performance with an 85.73% on-time arrival rate across 213,039 flights.

In third place, Azul Airlines (AD) closely followed Avianca with an 85.51% on-time arrival rate from 310,972 flights. LATAM Airlines (LA) demonstrated solid performance, achieving an 84.00% on-time arrival rate from 508,721 flights, and Caribbean Airlines (BW) maintained a 81.73% on-time arrival rate out of 26,644 flights.
