FAA Approves 1,000th Commercial Space Operation
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reached a significant milestone this week, marking its 1,000th licensed or permitted commercial space operation.
“The 1,000th FAA-licensed commercial space operation is a major milestone—one that highlights American innovation as we push the boundaries of what is possible in the final frontier. The collaboration between the FAA and NASA is building a safe and dynamic US commercial space industry that reinforces America’s leadership on the global stage,” said Sean P. Duffy, US Transportation Secretary and Acting NASA Administrator.
This achievement coincides with the recent signing of the “Enabling Competition in the Commercial Space Industry” Executive Order by President Donald Trump. The order is designed to support American innovation and streamline the growth of commercial space operations.
“The FAA is committed to providing safe, efficient, and timely access to space, ensuring the United States remains the global leader in space transportation, innovation, and safety,” said Bryan Bedford, FAA Administrator. He noted that this milestone would not have been possible without a dedicated commercial space team and projected that, at the current pace, the agency could oversee the next 1,000 licensed operations in less than five years.
The FAA’s licensing and oversight efforts encompass a range of activities, including launch and reentry operations, operator compliance, and safety protocols.
