FAA Certifies Boeing 737 MAX 7 for Commercial Flight

The US Federal Aviation Administration has granted Boeing an amended type certificate for the 737-7, formally authorizing the smallest variant of the 737 MAX family to enter commercial service.

The regulatory approval caps an extensive review process that began in 2018 and included more than 1,000 hours of flight and ground testing. Alongside the amended type certificate, the FAA updated Boeing’s Production Certificate No. 700 to encompass the 737-7.

Following initial reports of the approval, Boeing’s stock price closed up 6.7% for the day after an initial 1.2% rise.

“This important certification validates the rigor of our airplane’s design and recognizes the determination and resilience of our 737 MAX development team. Our team of dedicated engineers and test experts worked through challenges, an extended pandemic, and the transition to new certification processes. Through it all, our team stayed focused on completing all requirements and delivering a safe and more capable airplane to our customers,” Stephanie Pope, president and CEO, Boeing Commercial Airplanes, said in a statement.

Fleet Specifications and Family Positioning

Designed for high-altitude airports and hot climates, the 737-7 seats between 135 and 160 passengers in a two-class configuration and offers a range of up to 3,800 nautical miles (7,040 km). It holds roughly 10% more range potential than other variants in the MAX lineup. Boeing reported that the jet reduces fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by 20% and narrows its noise footprint by 50% compared to the older aircraft it replaces.

The 737 MAX family order book totals more than 7,200 aircraft, with over 2,300 delivered through late June 2026. The 737-7 sits alongside three other family variants:

  • 737-8: Seats 160 to 180 passengers with a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km).
  • 737-9: Seats 175 to 195 passengers across three additional seating rows with a range of up to 3,300 nautical miles (6,110 km).
  • 737-10: Seats 185 to 210 passengers with a range of up to 3,100 nautical miles (5,740 km). The 737-10 represents at least 28% of outstanding MAX orders, and Boeing is pursuing certification for the model this year.

Deliveries and Regulatory Context

Boeing and launch customer Southwest Airlines have begun preparations for initial deliveries, with technical teams updating aircraft to their final configuration. Aviation analytics firm Cirium estimates that Boeing has already built approximately 30 MAX 7 aircraft and nine MAX 10 aircraft awaiting delivery.

Southwest Airlines indicated it looks forward to entering the aircraft into service in the coming months, though the MAX 7 is not currently listed on its published flight schedules through March 2027.

The 737-7 approval was delayed several years beyond Boeing’s initial target of late 2022. The extended review followed heightened regulatory scrutiny after fatal MAX 8 crashes in 2018 and 2019, as well as a January 2024 mid-air cabin panel blowout on an Alaska Airlines MAX 9.

To satisfy federal safety mandates, Boeing implemented updates to the aircraft’s flight-control software, flight crew alerting system, and engine anti-ice system—the latter modified to address a potential condition identified during flight testing. These engineering updates incorporated recommendations from the National Transportation Safety Board.

“Our Boeing team held regular and detailed discussions with the FAA to ensure Boeing understood the requirements and provided transparency of our progress. With this certification program, Boeing has developed a clearer understanding of the latest regulatory requirements, which is expected to accelerate future airplane development with a renewed emphasis on human factors, safety and quality,” said Mike Sinnett, senior vice president of Product Strategy, Product Development and Development Programs.

In an internal employee memo, Pope noted that lessons learned from the 737-7 certification are being applied to the 737-10 and the 777X development programs. FAA Deputy Administrator Chris Rocheleau stated that approval for the MAX 10 is expected to follow the MAX 7.

The certification follows earlier regulatory milestones, including the FAA raising Boeing’s 737 MAX production ceiling from a post-incident cap of 38 planes per month to 42 per month last October, and subsequently to 47 per month in March. The FAA also recently restored Boeing’s authority to issue airworthiness certificates directly for all 737 MAX and 787 models after confirming consistent production quality.
