After nearly two years of suspension due to failure to meet International Aviation Safety Assessment standards, Mexico's aviation safety rating has been reinstated to Category 1, announced the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
With the restoration of Mexico's Category 1 status, US airlines are once again permitted to market and sell tickets for flights operated by Mexican carriers under their own names and designated codes.
The journey to regain Category 1 status was paved by collaborative efforts between the FAA and Mexico's Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC). Over the past two years, FAA provided its expertise and resources to AFAC, assisting in addressing safety concerns that led to the downgrade. Specialized teams of aviation safety experts from the FAA conducted multiple visits to various Mexican aviation facilities and dependencies, facilitating necessary improvements and closely monitoring progress.
The FAA's downgrade decision, which took place in May 2021, stemmed primarily from identified non-compliance with the safety protocols set forth by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). This setback had far-reaching implications, including financial challenges for the Mexican aviation industry.
Diana Olivares, President, CANAERO, and Manager, LATAM Airlines in Mexico, emphasized the magnitude of these losses, estimating that they had exceeded US$1 billion by June of this year.
