GE Presents CO2 Emission Reduction Technologies

At the Farnborough Airshow, GE presented its newest digital experience and announced an investment of US$1.6 billion on aviation research, development and emissions-reducing technologies as part of its 2050 objective to be net-zero. The company aims to become one of the leaders of the net-zero initiative in the aviation industry.

“The challenges ahead of our aviation industry are significant. We take our role in supporting the industry through the current recovery, as well as accelerating the path to lower CO2 emissions seriously. We currently have one of the most robust innovation pipelines in our company’s more than 100-year history to help the industry become more sustainable,” said Allen Paxson, Vice President and General Manager, GE Aviation.

GE has poured heavy investments to aid the recovery of the aviation industry and its customers. Paxson also announced the renewal of the company’s commercial engines portfolio, which now includes more fuel-efficient engines. GE also focused on outlining the technology building blocks for the future, searching for major improvements in fuel efficiency and compatibility with lower-carbon alternative fuels. GE engines currently power over 39,000 commercial airplanes.

GE has announced three demonstration programs since June 2021: a partnership between Airbus and CFM International to conduct flight tests of a hydrogen-powered engine; a partnership with NASA and Boeing to develop and fly a megawatt-class hybrid electric propulsion system; and CFM’s Revolutionary Innovation for Sustainable Engines (RISE) Program, consisting of advanced new engine architectures that include an open fan and other technologies.

“GE is ambitiously pursuing its commitment to being carbon neutral by 2030 in its own facilities and operations, including Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. Efforts to reach this goal include upgrading buildings to more energy efficient heating and cooling systems, seeking lower carbon energy sources to power sites and using lean practices to reduce waste. Through internal efforts of global teams across the business, GE Aviation facilities and operations have reduced Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by more than 20 percent since 2019,” reported the company via its GE Aviation Blog.

Mexico is a vital country for GE, with the company listing up to 11,000 employees in the country. Mexico’s strong market growth potential and customer base make it a key location for the company, as the company explained via a press release.
