JetZero Challenges Airbus, Boeing With Fuel-Efficient Jet

JetZero is advancing the development of a blended-wing-body commercial aircraft designed to reduce fuel consumption by up to 50% while challenging the long-standing dominance of Airbus and Boeing in the mid-size commercial aircraft market. Backed by airline investors, the US Air Force and private capital, the startup plans to conduct a full-scale demonstrator flight in 2027 and aims to achieve commercial certification by the end of 2030, positioning its first passenger aircraft to enter service in the early 2030s.

Inside a hangar in California’s Mojave Desert, JetZero is assembling a full-scale aircraft demonstrator designed to validate one of the most significant aerodynamic concepts in commercial aviation in decades. Unlike conventional tube-and-wing aircraft, the blended-wing-body configuration integrates the fuselage and wings into a single lifting surface designed to reduce drag and improve fuel efficiency.

According to the company, the aircraft could reduce fuel consumption by as much as 50% compared with today’s commercial aircraft while accommodating more than 200 passengers. The design targets a market segment currently dominated by Airbus and Boeing and is intended to replace aging aircraft such as the Boeing 757 and 767 with a platform optimized for medium- and long-haul routes.

The prototype is being built by Scaled Composites, a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman, using Pratt & Whitney engines currently installed on the Boeing 757. JetZero expects the demonstrator to complete its first flight in late 2027 under a development program partially financed by the US Air Force.

A successful demonstration flight would allow the company to advance toward commercial certification and begin scaling production at its planned manufacturing complex in Greensboro, North Carolina.

"We hope to achieve certification by the end of 2030," JetZero CEO Tom O’Leary told Reuters. "After that, assuming sufficient funds can be raised to scale up manufacturing, the first all-wing aircraft could enter airline service in the early 2030s." 

He added that commercial deployment will be gradual. "It is going to be a gradual process," O’Leary said. "Ten years from now, we expect the number of JetZero aircraft to be in the low hundreds, enough that passengers will use them on a regular basis."

The aircraft’s architecture differs substantially from conventional commercial airplanes. Rather than relying on a cylindrical fuselage attached to separate wings, the blended-wing-body design distributes lift across the entire structure, reducing aerodynamic drag and lowering thrust requirements during cruise flight.

According to JetZero, only the passenger cabin will be pressurized, while fuel tanks will occupy sections of the aircraft that would otherwise be unavailable in traditional designs. The company argues that the efficiency gains rely on mature technologies rather than new propulsion systems.

"No one has ever done this before," O'Leary told Reuters regarding the construction of the first full-scale blended-wing-body prototype. "We are using existing technology and more than 30 years of NASA research." 

NASA has studied the concept for decades, and Boeing previously explored similar designs, but no manufacturer has produced a commercial blended-wing-body aircraft. JetZero argues that its approach provides an alternative path to reducing aviation emissions by improving aerodynamics rather than relying on hydrogen propulsion or battery-electric technologies that would require new infrastructure and regulatory frameworks.

Investment firms supporting the company describe the platform as compatible with existing airports, airline operations and certification processes while providing immediate operating cost reductions through lower fuel consumption. According to B Capital, the aircraft is designed to use certified engine technology and existing airport infrastructure without requiring modifications to gates, jet bridges or ground equipment.

The company has attracted financial support from airlines seeking to reduce operating costs. United Airlines, Alaska Airlines and Delta Air Lines have invested in JetZero, while United has signed a conditional agreement to purchase up to 100 aircraft, with options for an additional 100 units. B Capital led a US$175 million financing round completed in January 2026, with participation from United Airlines Ventures, Northrop Grumman and RTX Ventures.

JetZero expects to launch another funding round before the end of 2026 as it prepares for flight testing and certification activities. O’Leary also said the company is evaluating a potential public offering. "You will not find a CEO of an aerospace company anywhere in the world who is not thinking about the public markets after SpaceX's IPO," he said.

The company believes a successful demonstration flight would significantly increase investor confidence. "Once the demonstrator flies, it will open the door to an aircraft order book because the airline industry will say, ‘This is real,’" O’Leary said.

Despite growing industry support, analysts continue to question whether the blended-wing-body concept can meet commercial airline requirements. Bjorn Fehrm, aerospace engineer and analyst, Leeham News, said the projected fuel savings remain unproven and suggested the aircraft could be better suited for military applications.

"This type of design is ideal for military aircraft that require stealth and cargo or fuel capacity, but not necessarily as suitable for passenger aircraft," Fehrm said.

Military applications remain part of JetZero’s long-term strategy. The platform is being developed for potential cargo transport, aerial refueling and military logistics missions in addition to commercial passenger operations.

The US Air Force has played a central role in advancing the program. In 2023, it awarded JetZero a four-year, US$235 million contract to develop the demonstrator aircraft. The defense partnership has reduced development risk while providing non-dilutive funding during the prototype phase.

According to B Capital, the aircraft addresses structural challenges facing commercial aviation. Airlines continue to face pressure from fuel costs, emissions-reduction targets and limited aircraft availability as Airbus and Boeing manage record order backlogs. The investment firm argues that incremental improvements in engines and materials are no longer sufficient to achieve major efficiency gains, making changes to aircraft architecture increasingly important.

If certification proceeds according to schedule, JetZero would become the first manufacturer to commercialize a blended-wing-body passenger aircraft.
