Passenger traffic across Mexico’s airport groups showed mixed performance in 1Q26, with ASUR and GAP reporting declines, while OMA posted growth. Data submitted to the Mexican Stock Exchange (BMV) revealed diverging trends between domestic and international demand. Passenger volumes reflect shifts in airline capacity, route performance, and regional exposure across Mexico’s aviation system.

ASUR reported a 0.7% decline in passenger traffic from January through April, with total volume reaching 14,357,116 passengers compared with 14,456,882 during the same period in 2025. In April alone, traffic fell 2.6%, declining from 3,511,745 passengers in April 2025 to 3,419,141 in April 2026. Adolfo Castro Rivas, CEO, ASUR, said the company continues to monitor demand trends across its network. The group operates nine airports, including Cancún International Airport, which recorded a 2.4% decline during the first four months of the year, with traffic falling from more than 10.7 million passengers to slightly above 10.4 million.

GAP reported a 6.0% contraction in passenger traffic during the same period, with total volume declining from 21,800,300 passengers in 2025 to 20,483,200 in 2026. Raúl Revuelta Musalem, CEO, GAP, said performance varied across the group’s airport network. In April, Guadalajara International Airport recorded a 0.9% increase, while Puerto Vallarta International Airport, Tijuana International Airport, and Los Cabos International Airport posted declines of 17.0%, 10.5%, and 8.1%, respectively, compared with April 2025.

In contrast, OMA reported a 2.1% increase in passenger traffic for the January–April period, with total volume rising from 8,921,728 passengers in 2025 to 9,112,622 in 2026. Ricardo Dueñas Espriu, CEO, OMA, said the group’s 13 airports delivered cumulative growth despite a weaker April performance. Monthly traffic declined 4.4% year over year, with domestic passenger traffic down 3.4% and international traffic falling 9.8%, signaling short-term pressure within a broader expansion trend.

The mixed performance reflects uneven demand patterns across Mexico’s aviation market, influenced by the pace of international travel recovery, domestic connectivity, and broader macroeconomic conditions. Monex said OMA’s April traffic results were negative, driven by declines in both domestic and international segments, particularly at the Monterrey International Airport hub. The firm added that future performance will depend on the recovery of business travel, economic conditions, and demand associated with global events.

For ASUR, Monex described April performance as mixed, citing continued weakness in Cancun and Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport, where international recovery remains gradual. At the same time, the firm highlighted stronger traffic performance in Colombia as a positive factor. It expects ASUR to generate organic growth through the remainder of 2026, supported by stabilization in international traffic and operational improvements at key airports.

Monex said GAP continues to face pressure, particularly within international segments at airports such as Tijuana, as well as external disruptions linked to Hurricane Melissa in Jamaica. The firm added that future performance will depend on airline capacity adjustments and broader economic conditions. It will also monitor potential demand associated with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which could support future passenger growth.

World Cup to Support Future Demand

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to generate a significant increase in passenger traffic across Mexico’s aviation sector. The tournament will feature 104 matches across three host countries, with Mexico hosting 13 matches, including the opening ceremony at Estadio Banorte. The venue is set to become the first stadium in history to host three FIFA World Cup opening matches.

The event is projected to attract more than 5.5 million additional visitors, supporting demand across air travel, hospitality, and related services.
