Mexico's Aerospace Industry Takes Center Stage at BJX Summit 4.0

Guanajuato hosted the BJX Aerospace Summit 4.0 in Leon, attracting around 500 participants, including industry leaders, government officials, and academia. The event aimed to strengthen the region's role in the global aerospace supply chain, spotlighting nearshoring opportunities, the integration of local suppliers, and initiatives to enhance regional talent development, positioning Mexico as a key international player in aerospace.

“The BJX Aerospace Summit 4.0 is a transformative engine for Guanajuato and Mexico. Collaboration between industry, government, and academia is enhancing the state’s competitiveness in aerospace. This sector is reshaping our economy with its growth and high development potential,” said Claudia Cristina Villaseñor Aguilar, the Ministry of Economy for Guanajuato, who led the opening ceremony on behalf of Governor Libia Denisse García Muñoz Ledo.

The event underscored Guanajuato’s strategic focus on integrating micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MiPyMEs) into the global supply chain. The Bajío Aerospace Cluster, ranked fourth in Mexico, is driving these efforts by connecting local suppliers to international aerospace networks. “This summit reflects the determination of aerospace entrepreneurs who are reinventing themselves in this industry. We aim to position the sector internationally,” said Luis Ernesto Rojas Ávila, Director General, Coordinating Office for the Promotion of Foreign Trade (COFOCE).

The summit facilitated the "Industrial Connection" business roundtable, where eight buyers and forty suppliers convened for 80 business meetings addressing 20 specific demands. This roundtable alone is projected to generate over US$2.5 million in economic impact.

“The Aerospace Summit enables the connection between supply and demand within the sector, supporting local providers in establishing partnerships with global companies,” stated Villaseñor.

Data from COFOCE reveals that Guanajuato's aerospace exports reached US$13 million between January and August 2024. Mexico, the world’s 12th largest aerospace supplier, expects total aerospace exports to surpass US$9.4 billion by year-end. The main export destinations include the United States (97.79%), followed by South Korea, Turkey, Japan, and Belize.

“We aim to shift perceptions of Mexico from a manufacturing hub to a country focused on ‘mentefactura,’ a mindset of innovation and advanced manufacturing leadership,” said Óscar Rodríguez Yáñez, President, Bajío Aerospace Cluster. He added that this vision includes initiatives leveraging nearshoring, reshoring, and the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) to increase regional content and drive industrial transformation.

“Our commitment to high-tech industries supports job creation and improves local wage levels, contributing to a more robust and inclusive economy,” stated Villaseñor, highlighting the Cluster’s strategies directed at strengthening industry-academia partnerships, with a focus on cultivating technical skills and creating high-value jobs.

In addition to business networking and strategic discussions, attendees at the BJX Aerospace Summit 4.0—including industry professionals and students—had access to a variety of high-level conferences, expert panels, and interactive activities. Participants engaged with flight simulation experiences, providing hands-on exposure to aerospace technology.
