Mexico’s interurban rail line connecting Mexico City with Felipe Ángeles International Airport (AIFA) is scheduled to be completed and operational before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on Dec. 15. During her morning briefing at the National Palace, she said initial test runs will begin this month as authorities carry out a multi-stage safety and signaling validation process. The line aims to strengthen connectivity ahead of the tournament, which opens June 11, 2026, at Azteca Stadium.
Sheinbaum noted that most civil works are finished, with the first onboard test trip planned for December. She emphasized that the testing phase, which could last up to two months, is essential to verify operational safety and signaling systems before passenger service begins.
The rail connection is part of broader federal efforts to integrate AIFA into Mexico City’s transportation network and ease congestion at Mexico City International Airport (AICM). The project, including 23 km of double-track electrified rail, six stations, a rail yard, eight pedestrian crossings, and nine vehicle bridges, is intended to facilitate travel for passengers, airport staff, and nearby communities.
Originally set to open in late 2024, the project faced delays. In April 2025, the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport transferred completion responsibilities from Ferrocarriles Suburbanos de CAF to the Ministry of Defense. Authorities expect the rail link to increase AIFA usage, although specialists note that additional routes and higher frequency may be needed to shift passengers from AICM.
