The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transport (SICT) announced that the last road connection to the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA) will be concluded in February 2023. Following a supervising operation, Jorge Nuño Lara, Head, SICT, reports that the final access section of Camino Tonanitla is at 95% completion.

SICT highlighted that the last stretches of land connectivity will be free of tolls, which are part of the main access roads to the airport. Pending works include a 14.1km fast-track highway that starts at Ecatepec near Casa de Morelos, State of Mexico.

Works at the Tonanitla ejido were delayed but began in December 2021. On Oct. 17, 2022, the right-of-way became available at a 6.6km stretch in the Tonanitla ejido. Most works in the main access road were completed in 2022, allowing for a swift conclusion of the stretch in 2023, explains SICT. These include two elevated viaducts.

The roads and Tonanitla road junction are near completion, with a 3.2km stretch being at 99% progress. The Tonanitla road currently stands at 90% progress on the largest stretch, which measures 3.8km. Two other stretches measuring 2.8km and 2.1km each register 81% and 100% completion percentages, respectively. The construction of the main access road is scheduled for mid-February.

The Mexican government had previously announced the expropriation of land from the Suburban Railroad and the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA). The entire stretch comprises 137.6 million m2 of land of the municipalities of Tultitlan, Tultepec and Nextlalpan, State of Mexico. The government carried out the expropriation to guarantee connectivity to and from AIFA, as reported by MBN.

"By virtue of the fact that the cause of public utility is fulfilled, consisting of the construction, conservation and maintenance of railroads and their auxiliary services and to meet the need of general interest that must be satisfied as a priority, it is indispensable the construction of works that allow the free access of passengers, workers and any citizen that needs to enter the International Civil and Military Airport General Felipe Ángeles and vice versa," states the DOF.
