Mexico’s Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) is requesting US$24.6 million from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) for the purchase of a building for a new International Civil Aviation Training Center (CIAAC).

The ministry highlights that these facilities are critical to improve the country’s aviation sector and help the country recover the Category 1 safety rating from the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This recognition would mean that Mexico’s civil aviation authority complies with the highest safety standards of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).

The current CIAAC center, located near the Mexico City International Airport (AICM), serves as a training center for aeronautical inspectors, verifiers and accident investigators. However, its infrastructure has structural damage caused by the 2017 earthquake, which has led to a significant reduction in the quality and quantity of services it offers. SICT is looking to purchase facilities located in the Venustiano Carranza municipality, near AICM, according to La Verdad Noticias.

“The project goal is determined by the size of the office building area to be acquired for the development of CIAAC activities, which amounts to a total of 16,458.70m2 of construction on the total land area of 5,865m2, which will offer the services in the required conditions,” says SICT. The reasoning behind the selection of those facilities have not been disclosed.

Air Passengers Increased 32% in January 2023
Mexico’s aviation industry transported 9.94 million passengers on scheduled flights in January 2023, a 32.1% increase when compared to the same month last year, according to data from the Federal Agency of Civil Aviation (AFAC). A total of 73,737 air operations took place during that period, representing a 10.9% growth from the sector.

In the domestic market, Mexican airlines served 4.98 million passengers during the period, an increase of 31.4%. The most in-demand routes were Mexico-Cancun, Monterrey-Mexico, Mexico-Guadalajara, Tijuana-Guadalajara and Tijuana-Mexico. Local airlines operating international flights transported 1.26 million passengers, a 31.6% increase year over year.

Foreign airlines also saw a 31.1% increase, totaling 3.6 million passengers. American Airlines led the sector, with Chicago-Cancun, Dallas-Cancun, Los Angeles-Guadalajara, Toronto-Cancun and Mexico-Houston as the most demanded routes.
