Viva Aerobus Signs ‘Target True Zero 2030s’

Viva Aerobus becomes the first Mexican airline to officially sign the ‘Target True Zero 2030s Airline Ambition’ initiative. This move follows the airline’s commitment to fight climate change after it launched its ‘The Future is Green’ campaign in October 2020.

The ‘Target True Zero’ initiative focuses on searching for new sustainable propulsion technologies, with electric airplanes surging as a possibility as countries seek to minimize climate change. Twenty airlines signed the agreement on the celebration of the COP26 Transport Day, which included Alaska Airlines, Air New Zealand and Icelandair among other major participants in the world’s aviation market. The signatory airlines operate more than 800 aircraft and transport over 177 million passengers through 1.8 million annual flights.

Viva Aerobus had previously launched its ‘The Future is Green’ Campaign to reduce CO2 emissions per seat, kilometer and passenger by 15 percent by 2025. Now, Viva Aerobus announced a press release that it signed the ‘Target True Zero 2030s’ agreement under four main lines of action. The first line asks airlines to prioritize short flights in the implementation of more sustainable propulsion technologies. Viva Aerobus explains that its airplanes will perform flights shorter than 750 kilometers using sustainable propulsion technologies by 2030.

Following the second line of action, Viva Aerobus will seek to decarbonize its flights as soon as the technology becomes available. For the third line, Viva Aerobus calls for aerospace manufacturers to speed up the technology as much as possible. Finally, the Mexican airline alongside the other 19 participants calls for governments to support the transition by creating incentives for airlines to adopt sustainable technologies while supplying the adequate infrastructure for the transition in airports around the world.
