Viva has announced a MX$4 billion (US$235 million) investment for the construction of a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at the Queretaro International Airport. The new facility will enable the airline to service and repair its fleet, creating 2,000 direct jobs and nearly 1,000 indirect specialized positions.

“This decision by Grupo Viva reaffirms their confidence in Queretaro and underscores their commitment to making air travel accessible in Mexico. This project will enhance competitiveness and generate quality jobs,” said Mauricio Kuri, governor, Queretaro.

“We needed the best location for our maintenance operations, and Queretaro met all our criteria, including geographic advantages and technical expertise. After a year of negotiations with several states, we determined this was the ideal location,” said Juan Carlos Zuazua, CEO, Viva. Construction is set to begin in two months, with completion expected in 2026.

“The MRO will be built on a 15- to 20-hectare site within the Queretaro airport. It will feature four large hangars with eight production lines, allowing us to service up to 160 aircraft per year,” said Zuazua. The facility will initially serve only Viva’s fleet, which currently consists of 90 Airbus A320 and A321 aircraft, but it may expand to service other operators in the future.

Viva, the largest domestic airline in Mexico, transported 27 million passengers in 2023 and has been operating in Queretaro since 2008. The company transported more than 700,000 passengers to and from Queretaro in 2024, marking a 32% increase from the previous year. The airline plans to offer over 1 million seats in the state by 2025.

In addition to the MRO facility, Viva is expanding its operations in Quertaro with new flight routes. The airline currently operates eight direct routes, including destinations such as Monterrey, Cancun, Merida, Los Cabos, Houston, and San Antonio. Starting Apr. 2, the airline will launch a new route to Dallas-Fort Worth, and in May, it will begin direct flights to Tijuana. The Monterrey-Queretaro route will also increase from four to five daily flights.
