Low-cost airline Volaris continues to grow and recently announced a recruitment campaign to hire at least 2,000 new employees to join its 5,000-strong workforce. This move will allow the airline to support its expansion plans in the Mexican and Central American markets.

“The growth of our Volaris Family is great news and thanks to the demand and growth we are having. Our talent recruitment campaign will not only impact the company, but will also support the creation of 8,400 indirect jobs, activating the job recovery and economic reactivation of Mexico,” said Juliana Angarita, Director of Talent and Organizational Development of Volaris.

In 2Q2021, the low-cost airline registered an increase in domestic and international demand of 18.9 percent and 15.5 percent, respectively, when comparted to 2019. Despite the pandemic, Volaris continues thriving and has expanded its routes. Furthermore, the company plans to add 25 new aircraft to its fleet in the following 18 months.

Nowadays, Volaris’s network includes a total of 71 cities, 43 in Mexico and 28 to the US and Central America. Its current fleet is composed of 90 aircraft. The airline closed 2020 with a market share of 40.5 percent of domestic traffic in Mexico, surpassing Aeroméxico and Viva Aerobus, which had 31.2 percent and 26 percent of the market, respectively.

“I am proud of what our team was capable of doing in the second quarter of 2021, considerably improving almost every operative and financial metric of the company… This efficient growth allowed us to double the EBIT in comparison to 2Q2019,” said Enrique Beltranena, President and Executive Director of Volaris.

Aeroméxico Faces Different Reality

While Volaris continues to grow its workforce, Aeroméxico is about to fire 1,105 employees, following the authorization of the Court of the Southern District of New York. The company’s objective is to “migrate to a specialized independent contractor.” This massive firing plus Aeroméxico’s success in renovating the Collective Labor Contracts with the four syndicates will generate US$86 million savings per year, according to the airline. This move is part of Aeroméxico’s financial restructuration, which started in mid-2020 when the airline filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
