National Irrigation Modernization Program Advances
The federal government has reported progress on the National Irrigation Modernization Program, which aims to optimize water use across 13 irrigation districts, benefiting 225,000 agricultural producers. The initiative, presented by CONAGUA, includes measures such as lining canals, installing pipelines, and introducing advanced irrigation systems to improve efficiency and redirect water for human consumption. With a total investment of MX$51.8 billion, the program has already secured agreements in multiple states, with further negotiations ongoing.
Green Tech Americas Drives Innovation in Agriculture
Green Tech Americas 2024 highlighted the role of technology and sustainability in protected agriculture amid rising food demand and climate challenges. Industry leaders and international experts emphasized the need for energy efficiency, water conservation, and market diversification to strengthen food security. Mexico’s protected agriculture sector continues to expand, with innovations like high-tech greenhouses and international trade agreements opening new opportunities for producers.
COFEPRIS Tightens Food and Beverages Advertising Rules
COFEPRIS is updating regulations on food and non-alcoholic beverage advertising, with a strong focus on protecting children, particularly in digital media. The new guidelines will restrict the use of cartoon characters, celebrities, and interactive elements while requiring clear display of front-of-package warning labels. Currently under public consultation, the proposed rules aim to balance public health protection with commercial freedom, though industry experts highlight the need for greater regulatory clarity.
Brazil’s Serves as Model for Mexico’s Food Policies
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development hosted a conference analyzing Brazil’s success in reducing rural poverty through family farming policies. Former Brazilian Minister José Graziano da Silva outlined key measures, including income transfer programs, higher wages, and economic support for small farmers. Experts linked Brazil’s approach to Mexico’s current policies, emphasizing the role of family farming in achieving food security and economic development.
Clariant to Relocate Part of Mexico Production to the US
Clariant AG will shift part of its adsorbent production from Mexico to the US in response to tariffs imposed by President Trump, relocating operations for the US market to Florida while maintaining its Puebla plant for local demand. The move comes amid growing trade tensions, with Trump announcing new tariffs on April 2, impacting key industries like automotive and metals. Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum is negotiating to remove existing tariffs on steel and aluminum and secure preferential trade treatment.
