Corey Solar carried out the installation of photovoltaic panels at Alfrut's Zamora food plant, which is set to fulfill 30% of the company's energy requirements. The installation considers the company’s need for sustainable energy, while keeping the integrity of food processing intact.
The Mexican food industry is increasingly turning to solar energy to power its facilities and production processes. This shift not only leads to cost savings but also mitigates the risk of product contamination, while simultaneously enhancing sales. In this context, Alfrut, a Michoacan-based company with over 14 years of experience in the storage and freezing of fruits and vegetables, has implemented a distributed solar generation system at its plant in Zamora.
The installation of solar technology was carried out by Corey Solar, a solar panel distribution company. Due to energy regulation restrictions in Mexico, the solar project installed at Alfrut’s facilities in Zamora, spanning 3,800m2, was divided into two phases, each with a capacity of 499 kW, to remain under the distributed generation scheme, as explained Fernando Verduzco, Energy Project Developer, Corey Solar. The first phase covers approximately 13% of Alfrut's machinery energy demands, while the second one fulfills about 30% of the complex's energy needs.
Alongside the installation of panels, Alfrut emphasized the importance of using a high-quality, watertight solar mounting system to protect the metal roof covering the stored food, the company's equipment and machinery, as well as their investment in the photovoltaic solar energy project. Alfrut and Corey Solar opted for cutting-edge technology in solar module mounting, using cutting-edge devices from the American company S-5! These devices reduced the installation weight by up to 80%, while also sealing and preventing water leaks that could potentially contaminate the food. Julio Valencia, Project Director, Corey Solar, emphasized that this collaboration with S-5! reflects a shared commitment to optimizing solar panel installations on metal roofs in Mexico.
Juan Carlos Fuentes, Director for Latin America and Europe, S-5!, underscored not only the importance of a robust and secure photovoltaic system installation, but also the critical need for waterproofing, given the nature of this company. “In the food industry, water leaks from the roof can contaminate products and cause damage to machinery and equipment. To ensure the highest standards, our solutions undergo rigorous examination, including the ASTM E 2140 standard.”
