Alsea, confirmed plans to introduce Chipotle Mexican Grill to the Mexican market with the opening of five locations in northern Mexico starting in early 2026. The company finalized its agreement with Chipotle in 2025 after several years of discussion. Armando Torrado, CEO, Alsea, said during a recent earnings call that the first restaurant is expected to open in 1Q26. The remaining four would follow within the year as part of a cautious but deliberate entry strategy.

“We want to replicate the story of Starbucks or Domino’s Pizza, starting with five stores in one year. We will open the first in early 2026, so let us be cautious,” said Torrado. He added that Alsea and Chipotle have identified three to four regions in Mexico, primarily in the north, where brand recognition is higher due to proximity to the US.

Chipotle’s proposed entry will be as a modern fast-casual concept offering fresh and nutritious food, with a menu that includes familiar Mexican ingredients such as carnitas, barbacoa, and avocado. Torrado emphasized that this offering will not compete with traditional tacos or casual Mexican fare. “This is a healthy and convenient option. It is a unique value proposition that does not currently exist in Mexico. We are very confident we can capture some customers or share competitors’ stomach space,” Torrado said.

The partnership will leverage Alsea’s experience in building QSR brands in Mexico, including operational efficiency, supply chain development, and digital platforms. Alsea currently operates 4,795 restaurants across Mexico, South America and Europe, including 1,923 Starbucks (905 in Mexico) and 1,526 Domino’s (969 in Mexico).
