Corn Production Expected to Grow in 2021By María Fernanda Barría | Tue, 05/18/2021 - 15:14
Mexico's corn production is expected to reach 28 million tons this year due to a 2.6 percent growth, reported the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The document "Expectativas Agroalimentarias 2021" elaborated by the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP) reports total production includes both white and yellow corn. Ministry of Agriculture estimates 3,352, 155 tons of yellow corn total production in 2021. As for white corn, the ministry forecast approximately 24,747,585 tons.
The country presented a yellow corn production decrease during 2020 as Chihuahua registered 1,149,104 tons, Jalisco 851,479 tons and Tamaulipas 345,444 tons. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, Mexico imports approximately 69 percent of its yellow corn for the consumption of the livestock industry. The government aims to replace 16 million tons of US yellow corn imports as well as a majority of genetically modified products (GMO) with national products by 2024. Last year the administration decided to implement a decree to gradually replace the use, acquisition, distribution, promotion and import of glyphosate concerning corn, as previously reported in an MBN article.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador states that the policy aims to help the country achieve self-sufficiency and food sovereignty by establishing sustainable agricultural production. Tom Vilsack, US Secretary of Agriculture, said the ban on imports of genetically modified corn would only apply to the grain used for human food products and not for livestock feed consumption, El Economista informs. López Obrador's decree suggests that herbicides should be substituted "by sustainable and culturally appropriate alternatives that allow production and are safe for human health and the country's biocultural diversity."
To enhance the quality and production of corn, the Ministry of Agriculture and Vivi, a private company, has implemented an agroecological technology technique to eradicate plagues in the crops, MBN reported. Recently, Víctor Villalobos, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, stated that Mexico is among the Top five countries with the best pest and disease control systems.
In 2020, grain corn production totaled 27,707,775 tons, a 1.8 percent increase over 2019.
