Danone Expands High-Protein Line With New Silk Offerings
Danone is expanding its plant-based portfolio with new high-protein innovations under the Silk brand as demand for functional beverages and higher protein intake continues to rise. Wendy Nunnelley, President of plant-based, Danone North America, told Food Dive that 75% of consumers are adding more protein to their diets, and nearly two-thirds are already consuming plant-based dairy alternatives every week.
“We really see a gap in the marketplace for a good plant-based, higher protein offering that just has not been there, and that consumers are demanding. We are seeing consumers move into protein in such a strong way,” Nunnelley said.
The company expects Silk Protein’s functional profile and limited competition in the category to help reinvigorate the plant-based milk segment. US retail sales of plant-based milk in 2024 totaled US$2.5 billion, down 5% from the prior year and returning to 2021 levels, according to Circana. Unit sales have declined for three consecutive years, although price increases have partially offset those drops. Danone noted during its third-quarter earnings that plant-based remains a work in progress in North America. Still, a spokesperson said US households using dairy alternatives increased 16% from 2020, reaching 56%.
“Being able to directly offer what consumers are looking for is important at any time, and particularly when the macroeconomic environment might be more challenging,” Nunnelley said. Silk Protein will launch regionally this month with a nationwide rollout planned for early 2026. The product will be available in original and chocolate flavors.
Danone Mexico is also expanding Silk’s presence with Silk Alto en Proteína (Silk High in Protein), a ready-to-drink option developed with Tetra Pak. The beverage contains 16gr of plant protein, six essential nutrients and no added sugar, artificial sweeteners, lactose or gluten. It is offered in vanilla and chocolate and packaged in a 300ml container designed for portability and shelf stability.
Paula Vasconcellos, Marketing Director of Silk, Danone Mexico, said the product responds to a growing demand for convenient and functional nutrition. “Silk Alto en Proteína is the result of listening to those demands. With this launch, we deliver a practical and functional solution for consumers seeking quality plant-based nutrition,” she said.
Data from Glanbia Nutritionals shows that 58% of Mexican consumers regularly drink plant-based beverages, reflecting increasing interest in accessible and sustainable options.
The Tetra Pak packaging protects protein integrity and maintains nutritional value while allowing the product to be stored at room temperature, reducing reliance on cold-chain distribution and minimizing food waste. The containers are made from 72% carton, 23% polyethylene and 5% aluminum, and are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
Marcela Mendoza, Marketing Director, Tetra Pak Mexico, said the collaboration aligns with the company’s sustainability goals. “Our goal is for every innovation to contribute to a more sustainable food system. The alliance with Silk shows how packaging technology can enhance products that support the health of people and the planet,” she said.
Global Market Trends in Plant-Based Protein
The global plant-based protein market is expanding rapidly due to changing consumer preferences, increased focus on health and sustainability, and the rise of protein-rich diets. The market was valued at about US$14 billion in 2023 and is expected to nearly double to US$26 billion by 2031, according to research from Meticulous Research.
Health and wellness awareness is a primary driver. Urban lifestyles, aging populations, and growing rates of chronic disease are pushing consumers toward nutrient-dense foods. Plant-based proteins offer a lower-allergen alternative to animal protein and align with demand for natural and functional products.
Advances in food processing have improved the versatility of plant proteins, enabling their use in beverages, snacks, bakery items and meat alternatives without compromising taste or texture. Clean-label and additive-free formulations continue to gain importance.
Soy protein remains the largest segment of the market due to affordability and widespread use, while pea protein is the fastest-growing category because it is gluten-free, lactose-free and allergen-friendly. Powdered formats dominate due to ease of handling and stability, though liquid applications such as ready-to-drink beverages are expanding as convenience becomes a priority.
Organic plant proteins are gaining traction as consumers seek products aligned with sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyles. North America leads global consumption, while Asia-Pacific is the fastest-growing region, driven by rising incomes, urbanization and increased awareness of protein-rich diets. Overall, strong demand for healthier, sustainable and protein-focused foods continues to create opportunities for product innovation and expansion in the plant-based beverage sector.
