In the context of International Beer Day, it is worth looking at this industry far beyond the bottle or the simple moment of celebration. To talk about beer in Mexico is to talk about a deeply integrated value chain that begins in the fertile field and extends all the way to the bar, the corner store, the restaurant, and millions of consumers across the nation. It means talking about farmers, logistics drivers, local merchants, production teams, and vibrant communities that all form part of the exact same productive ecosystem.

Beer is, at its absolute core, an agribusiness. Its origin lies directly in the land: in the high-quality barley that brings every single bottle to life. In Mexico, this vital chain begins with the production of nearly 1 million tons of barley per year, cultivated by approximately 5,000 dedicated farmers. This first link in the process not only drives rural economies and generates dignified livelihoods; it also serves as a constant reminder that the future of our entire industry depends on how conscientiously we care for the soil, the water, and the agricultural practices that sustain our essential raw materials.

Its positive impact does not stop in the field, either. Throughout every stage of its value chain, the brewing agribusiness contributes around 1.6% of Mexico's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This solid economic footprint makes it a key player in national economic development, as well as a powerful platform capable of uniting strategic efforts among businesses, local governments, civil society, and small enterprises.

One of the most powerful elements of this extensive chain is its incredible reach. Beer is commercialized and sold in roughly 1 million retail points across Mexico, primarily local neighborhood grocery stores, known as tienditas de abarrotes. This means its economic impact reaches virtually every single corner of the country, actively strengthening local economies and creating sustainable opportunities for small business owners who are an essential part of everyday community life.

Yet, precisely because of that massive reach, discussing the present and future of beer also means discussing deep responsibility. As a modern industry, generating economic value alone is no longer enough; we must do so while actively preserving natural resources, strengthening the social fabric of our communities, and promoting moderate, responsible consumption. The long-term sustainability of beer directly depends on the health of the countryside, the security and availability of water resources, and our continuous ability to innovate through more efficient manufacturing processes, circular economy models, and resilient agricultural practices.

The global transition toward more sustainable agri-food systems represents one of the greatest environmental and economic challenges of our generation. In this critical context, the brewing industry has a clear and urgent opportunity: to be a driving force and part of the solution. From field to bar, we can actively promote regenerative practices, optimize water and energy use, reduce overall environmental impact, and build strategic partnerships that generate genuine shared value for society.

That is why beer does more than just bring social moments together, it bridges sectors. It acts as a vital link between the countryside and the city, between time-honored tradition and technological innovation, and between economic growth and environmental sustainability. Understanding it through this broader lens allows us to fully grasp its true value: that of an industry which, when managed with purpose and responsibility, can meaningfully contribute to the comprehensive, long-term development of Mexico.

On this International Beer Day, let us celebrate everything behind every brew: the land that gives it origin, the passionate hands that make it possible, the local shops that bring it closer to people, and our collective responsibility to build an increasingly sustainable industry. The future of beer in Mexico is not built solely inside production plants or bars; it is built from the roots up: in the fields, in the heart of our communities, and in the conscious decisions we make every single day. Perhaps that is the most meaningful invitation of all: to toast not only to the joyful moments we share together, but to the opportunity to inspire a better world from every single link in this chain.
