Heineken, Grupo Modelo Halt Production

Heineken and Grupo Model have confirmed they will stop the production and distribution of beer in Mexico on April 5. The National Chamber of the Transformation Industry (Canacintra) has stated beer cannot be produced for a month as it is not considered an essential activity. The latter group has assured that there is already enough alcoholic beverage supply for a month.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER), together with subsidiaries, is working hard to maintain food production, food inspection, and food commercialization. Inspections will continue to ensure food quality is guaranteed.

The ministers of agriculture from different countries in region agreed this week to strengthen cooperation, primarily to assure that regional food supply remains sufficient.

In other news, Mexican scientists continue to make breakthrough discoveries in relation to better agricultural seeds.

COVID-19 contingency

Representatives from Mexico and several Central American countries and the Dominican Republic held a video conference this week where they agreed to create inventories of agricultural products available for commercialization. This is one of a few measures that will be taken with the intention of more cooperation to battle the impact of COVID-19.

The National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishery (CONAPESCA) is taking actions to ensure the continuity of production. One measure is obligate all producers to register their production activities on digital platforms.

The National Service for Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality (SENASICA) will continue its inspection tasks to guarantee food supply. Following recommendations of Health authorities, the agency will continue work in all its subsidiaries.

Rice producers in Tamaulipas are seeking to break the record of harvested rice this year. The production demand has risen in part due to panic buying in the light of the COVID-19 situation.

Beef consumption has decreased by 25 percent in Durango, according to a report of the Durango Regional Livestock Union (UGRD).

 

Other Actions By Government

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Víctor Villalobos signed a Specific Collaboration Agreement with the Navy which updates measures to strengthen fishery inspection and surveillance in Mexican marine zone, both inland and on sea. The season for grouper fishing is about to kick off in the Sea of Cortez.

The first stage of the program to support medium-sized corn producers will include Sinaloa, Sonora, Tamaulipas and Chihuahua. The agency for Mexican food security, SEGALMEX, is offering a minimum price of US$168 for a ton of white or yellow corn.

 

Science & Technology

The More Cane (Mascaña) group at the College of Postgraduates (Colpos) has developed improved sugar cane seeds, after studying germination in soil conditions with seeds containing varying levels of sodium alginate, calcium chloride and starch. 

 

New export markets

The Association of Farmer Organizations of the South of Sonora (Aoass) has announced that it is negotiating with Turkey and Algeria to export crystalline wheat. The group's estimated production is at 435 thousand tons, with 290 being crystalline, and 145 for bread.
