The Ministry for Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) reported that in 2022, Jalisco, Veracruz and Oaxaca stood out as the entities with the largest contribution to the 297.6 million t of agri-food production in Mexico.

Victor Villalobos, Minister, SADER, highlighted that for the fourth consecutive year, agricultural, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture production in Mexico registered sustained growth in 2022. In 2019, food production stood at 287.4 million t, growing to 290.7 million t in 2020, 294.7 million t in 2021 and finally reaching 297.6 million t in 2022.

“These figures show that the national countryside not only endured, but that thanks to the hard work of our farmers, it has guaranteed, in time and form, enough food for all Mexican households,” Villalobos said.

In 2022, Jalisco earned first place in national primary production, by producing 41.7 million t of agricultural, livestock, fishery and aquaculture products, with white corn, sugar cane, yellow corn, green chili, red tomato, tamarind and palay rice as the main products. The production value of these reached MX$217.8 billion (US$12.2 billion). This represented an increase of 1.2% over the 2021 production, when the state generated 41.2 million t of food. Moreover, the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), highlighted that Jalisco’s figures represented 14% of the national production.

In second place stands Veracruz, which registered a volume of 31.8 million t, 10.7% of Mexico’s total food production, with a value of MX$103.7 billion (US$5.8 billion). Oaxaca took third place, with a total production of 22.6 million t, equivalent to 7.6% of the national production and a value that rose MX$30.3 billion (US$1.7 billion).

According to SADER, the region of the country, responsible for the largest volume of food production was the center-west, comprising Jalisco, Michoacan, San Luis Potosi, Guanajuato, Colima, Aguascalientes and Queretaro, with a total production of 88.9 million t. This is followed by the southeast region with 80.4 million t, the northeast with 57.6 million t, center with 35.9 million t and the northwest, with 34.6 million t.

“The federal government firmly believes that food security is the best way to build strong societies, eradicate hunger, poverty and achieve social justice, through a model that allows adequate feeding for all,” Villalobos stated.
