The Californian company SAVRpak announced an alliance with Mexico’s online supermarket Jüsto. SAVRpak is a food tech innovation company that developed the first-ever moisture control technology capable of extending the shelf-life and freshness of products up to three times. Together, the companies will ensure that berries last longer.

Beginning in December, all packed berries ordered through Jüsto will include SAVRpak, a small plant-based thermodynamic pouch that instantly removes condensation, known to be the number one cause of early spoilage and the overall reduced quality of berries.

“We are excited to announce that Jüsto is our first retail partner to integrate SAVRpak into its food packaging to ensure shoppers have more time to enjoy delicious berries that too often spoil before eaten,” said Grant Stafford, co-CEO, SAVRpak. “Jüsto is truly an innovator for implementing new solutions like SAVRpak that promise to help alleviate the food waste crisis,” he added.

SAVRpak is a thermodynamic, biodegradable, chemical-free pouch that is placed in produce packaging before it is sealed. This technology purifies the atmosphere within the package to slow the aging process by targeting conditions that affect shelf-life such as excess moisture and bacteria. In preliminary trials, SAVRpak has proven to extend the shelf-life of different berry varieties such as golden berries by more than 10 days, blackberries by over seven days, raspberries by more than five days, and strawberries by over four days.

Ricardo Weder, CEO, Jüsto stressed that the company is committed to delivering not only first-quality products, but is also dedicated to doing so in the most sustainable way possible. “With the integration of SAVRpak’s technology, our base of sustainably-minded shoppers will feel good knowing that the product they are buying will have a positive impact on the environment by reducing food waste at home.”

In 2021, SAVRpak was recognized as owning one of TIME Magazine's Best Inventions for the launch of its flagship product, the Peel and Stick pad, designed to be placed inside standard plastic takeout containers, clamshells, pizza boxes and paper bags to keep takeout food fresh longer. Currently, SAVRpak can be found in 41 states, 21 countries, and in takeout from hundreds of restaurants around the US.

Jüsto is the first fully online supermarket in Mexico. It was founded in 2019 and offers an extensive catalog of products, both from top brands and local producers, at competitive prices. Furthermore, Jüsto works toward building a more just and sustainable economic model by empowering small and medium-sized producers and giving them access to sell their products online. "Jüsto is an agile and innovative company that seeks to transform the grocery market and achieve the best results to become Latin America’s favorite supermarket by 2030,” said Ana Franco, Global Impact Lead, Jüsto, in an interview with American Retail.
