Mango Season in Mexico: Supply Dynamics, Market Trends

Mango season in Mexico, which kicked off in January, is currently active through various production zones across the country—Michoacan, Jalisco, Nayarit, and Sinaloa. This year, Mexico's mango supply has encountered delays due to an unusually warm winter, affecting shipment volumes to the United States. Approximately 40 million boxes have crossed the border so far, slightly behind last year's pace of 41 million boxes by this time.

Cindy Schwing, Representative, Splendid by Porvenir, a company specializing in the production and distribution of tropical fruit in US and Canadian markets, attributes this year's slow start to a delayed season and severe drought conditions in key agricultural regions of Mexico. "The dry weather has hindered fruit growth, resulting in an abundance of smaller sizes, impacting overall yield," Schwing noted.

"We are gearing up for the northern Sinaloa harvest next week, the largest producing state in Mexico. Many retailers underestimate the volume that comes from northern Sinaloa toward the end of the Mexican mango season, extending availability into September and reducing early reliance on overseas fruit," Schwing added. 

While prices have remained steady, Schwing anticipates adjustments as supply increases in the coming weeks. Moreover, the entrepreneur explained that despite smaller sizes dominating due to the drought, these are ideal for promotional activities, supporting sales through the summer months. "As we navigate through the peak season alongside stone fruits, cherries, watermelons, grapes, and berries, mangoes are poised for prominent placements, including Fourth of July promotions," Schwing highlighted. 

Splendid by Porvenir is set to commence shipments from its Los Mochis facilities in northern Sinaloa by the last week of June. Notably, being a fruit fly-free zone allows mangoes from this region to skip hot water treatment, preserving fruit quality and extending shelf life. Splendid's flagship Ataulfo variety, branded as Jaguar, will be available in both conventional and organic options this year.
