During the fifth edition of World Food Safety Day (WFSD), celebrated on June 7, 2023, specialists highlighted that Mexican companies are not only leaders in food production, but focus on monitoring the nutritional quality of their products, as well as their sanitary processes.

According to the UN, every year, 600 million people get sick and 420,000 die due to the 200 different types of illnesses that can be transmitted by food. Young people and vulnerable populations are among the most affected. This year’s WFSD theme is “Food Standards Save Lives.”

“Standards not only provide farmers and processors with guidance on the hygienic handling of food, but also define maximum levels of additives and contaminants, among other components, that can be safely consumed. Governments, organizations and regional or intergovernmental bodies are responsible for setting such standards,” reads a statement on the UN’s official website.

Araceli Martínez, Nutritionist, pointed out that Mexican companies such as Bimbo and Gruma place special emphasis on monitoring the safety of their products and possess many international certifications that endorse it. Bimbo, the leading Mexican bread production company, was awarded the Food Safety System Certification 22000 (FSSC) for production processes. The FSSC validates Bimbo’s food safety management processes, demonstrating that food is safe for consumers.

Gruma, world leader in the production of nixtamalized corn flour, with presence in over 110 countries, is internationally recognized for its high-quality standards. The company holds the international Safe Quality Food Certification (SQF), which carries out rigorous assessments in the food value chain, from the cultivation of raw materials and the manufacture of products, to packaging, storage and distribution. Likewise, Gruma holds the International Standard ISO 9001:2008 Certification, which establishes the requirements to implement a Quality Management System.

In the framework of WFSD, SADER and SENASICA organized a series of conferences aimed at recognizing the work of producers, transporters, warehouses, distributors, marketers and consumers in the food value chain. Javier Calderón, Director, SENASICA, pointed out that this year's theme fully matches SENASICA’s guidelines to promote safety along the food supply chain in the 32 states of Mexico. “The work of governments, producers, processors and retailers is essential in ensuring compliance with food standards, to ensure that consumers have healthy and quality products at their disposal,” he said.
