The Mexican startup MicroIN has been awarded the Sustainability prize by KM ZERO Food Innovation Hub. The recognition was granted for the company's capability to recover soil through the use of bio-inputs.

MicroIN, founded by Victoria Conde and Miguel Berretta, focuses on offering sustainable alternatives for agricultural production, aiming to replace the use of chemical products. Its technology utilizes microencapsulation strategies to optimize the formulation and stability of biological products, which helps reduce costs and avoid losses in the production chain. “The two winning startups this year clearly reflect the great challenges of our food system: CIRCE Scientific addresses how we can live longer and better through what we eat, and MicroIN reminds us that there is no future for food without a sustainable countryside,” stated Beatriz Jacoste, CEO, KM ZERO.

In the same Sustainability category, Argentina-based startup Bio Blends received an honorable mention for developing gas-based products that extend the shelf life of food. The award in the Innovation category went to the Spanish company CIRCE Scientific for developing health ingredients through its cocrystallization technology. The honorable mention in this category was awarded to the Argentina-based company Kresko RNAtech, which uses artificial intelligence to design new ingredients.

The selection jury was composed of Natalia Mondragón, Investment Associate, Mercy Corps Ventures; Vanessa Bello, Principal, SPVentures; Jessica Ramírez, Manager of Alliances, Bimbo Ventures; and Alejandro Guzmán, Director, Grupo Arancia. The event, ftalks Food Summit LATAM, also featured a pavilion where 37 startups, 21 of them from Mexico, showcased their projects.
