The Mexican government has convened key stakeholders to discuss the future of the country’s shrimp industry and implement measures to regulate the sector. Julio Berdegué, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, urged all actors in the fishing and aquaculture sectors to take concrete steps to regulate shrimp production.

During the National Forum on The Future of Mexican Shrimp, the minister emphasized the government’s commitment to finding long-term solutions rather than temporary measures. “We are open to working together to push for fundamental solutions, within the limits of our capacities. We are not willing to keep applying temporary fixes,” he said.

The event, organized by the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fisheries (CONAPESCA), includes federal and state government officials, legislators, fishers, business representatives, and members of the scientific community. Participants are discussing strategies to balance economic growth, environmental sustainability, and social welfare in shrimp production.

Berdegué highlighted the importance of focusing on key areas, including processing transformation, employment protection, economic development of fishing communities, and environmental sustainability. “If we do not address this issue, neither shrimp nor other fisheries will have a future. We will take decisive actions, cutting what needs to be cut and strengthening what needs to be strengthened,” he stated.

Leonel Cota, Undersecretary of Agriculture, acknowledged the challenges within the shrimp sector, including the need for improved regulatory conditions. He emphasized that restructuring and reorganization are necessary to ensure long-term sustainability.

Alejandro Flores, Head, CONAPESCA, explained that the forum aims to assess the current state of shrimp production in Mexico and develop collaborative solutions. Based on the discussions, stakeholders will outline strategic roadmaps to strengthen the fisheries and aquaculture industries. Moreover he emphasized the economic significance of shrimp production in Mexico and its impact on families dependent on the industry. “Improving shrimp production practices remains a priority for the government and industry stakeholders,” he concluded.
