Geography, climate and terrain diversity have given Mexico unparalleled opportunities to exploit its primary sector. Leaving the mining sector aside, the agriculture, fishing and livestock segments have become a source of revenue for the country and have helped to position Mexico as the 12th-largest food producer in the world. It is expected to become the 10th by 2020. In recent years, the sector has enjoyed increased competitiveness and 2015 marked the first time in 20 years that the industrty registered a surplus in the country’s trade balance.
