PepsiCo Foundation Invests MX$6 Million in Food Security Efforts
The PepsiCo Foundation Mexico celebrated its 13th anniversary by announcing a new investment of MX$6.7 million (US$357,367) to support food security initiatives that aim to benefit 1 million people over the next five years. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the Mexican Food Bank Network (Red BAMX).
The investment will strengthen Red BAMX’s logistical capabilities in the Bajio region through the donation of a 22t truck. It will also be used to enhance the infrastructure of food banks in Jalisco, Yucatan, and Chiapas, and support the Field Recovery Fund. This fund aims to rescue food directly from farms and reduce waste by enabling producers to utilize surplus crops that are not commercially distributed.
Mariana Jiménez, General Director, Red BAMX, says that the alliance is a critical step in improving food access in high-need areas, acknowledging the importance of corporate partnerships in expanding the network’s reach. She adds that the collaboration with the PepsiCo Foundation would allow the organization to strengthen its operations and bring food to more communities across Bajio and the southeast of the country.
In 2024, Red BAMX rescued over 182t of food. Beyond food recovery, the organization also leads programs that promote nutrition education, redirect prepared meals from the hospitality sector, and engage other actors in building more sustainable food systems.
Since its creation, the PepsiCo Foundation Mexico has invested US$28 million in civil society organizations, benefiting over 5 million people. Looking forward, the foundation will continue to focus on three areas: meeting basic needs for food and water, strengthening community capacity through infrastructure and training, and supporting community self-management through sustainable exit strategies.
