The Mexican Institute of Industrial Property (IMPI) has officially declared the Wines of the Queretaro Wine-Producing Region as a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), recognizing the region’s wines for their distinct quality and origin.

A geographical indication is a designation used to identify products with characteristics, quality, or a reputation linked to a specific geographic origin. The designation for Queretaro’s wine region follows a detailed study of the area's soil, climate, and grape varieties to determine the region’s capacity for high-quality wine production.

The PGI will enable producers to legally distinguish their wines based on their geographic origin, while protecting the product against misuse or imitation. It also provides a framework to strengthen market access and enhance regional and international promotion efforts. According to IMPI, only authorized users will be permitted to use the name as declared, and products must be labeled with Protected Geographical Indication or PGI. IMPI will also pursue international recognition of the PGI under relevant trade agreements, aiming to support the Mexican wine industry’s global presence.

Adriana Vega Vázquez, Queretaro’s Minister of Tourism, noted this is the first PGI recognition for a wine-producing region in Mexico. She highlighted the collaboration between producers, academic institutions and the government in securing the designation. Meanwhile, Eugenio Parrodi, President, Queretaro Wine Cluster, emphasized the historical importance of the PGI, stating that it validates the work of multiple generations of local producers and enologists.

Santiago Nieto Castillo, Director General, IMPI, underscored the role of coordinated efforts across public and private sectors in obtaining the PGI. He said the designation promotes economic development based on local traditions and distinctive regional characteristics, in line with the goals of the current federal administration.
