SADER Reinforces Support for Agriculture in Sinaloa
The Mexican government reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening the country’s agricultural sector and water management strategies during the inauguration of Expo Agro Sinaloa 2025. Julio Berdegué, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, highlighted Sinaloa’s key role in national food production and outlined new initiatives to support farmers, ranchers and aquaculture producers.
Sinaloa produces more than 12Mt of food annually, valued at MX$80 billion (US$3.9 billion). It is the leading producer of white corn, tomatoes and beans, and ranks second in green chili and potato production. The state also generates 440,000t of aquaculture and fishery products, valued at MX$13 billion.
Water management remains a priority as the country faces challenges related to climate change. The federal government’s National Water Plan 2024-2030 includes the modernization of Irrigation Districts 075 of the Fuerte River and 010 of Culiacán-Humaya. This project will benefit 14,000 users and modernize 50,000ha with a federal investment of US$13.5 billion, supplemented by contributions from farmers. Governor Rubén Rocha welcomed this support, emphasizing its potential to boost agricultural productivity and enhance national food sovereignty.
Berdegué emphasized the importance of farmers in ensuring Mexico’s food security, particularly in the production of non-GMO white corn. He also called on the sector to support President Claudia Sheinbaum’s leadership in addressing international trade challenges, including negotiations with the US government.
