Starbucks Expands Sustainability Initiatives in Mexico City
Starbucks México has strengthened its environmental commitment in Mexico City by implementing initiatives aimed at transforming both its operations and customer consumption habits. The company addresses sustainability challenges through waste management and reusable product programs.
As part of its Waste Management Plan, launched in 2024, all Starbucks stores in Mexico City now use compostable plastic packaging. Moreover, the company has installed over 180 return points in select stores to collect the compostable plastics. These materials, designed to degrade within three to six months through composting processes, support efforts toward a circular economy. Additionally, the program includes waste separation into three categories: organic, inorganic, and compostable, with systems in place to ensure proper disposal. Employees and customers are also being educated on responsible waste management.
Starbucks "For Here" initiative further supports its sustainability efforts by promoting reusable utensils within stores. In 2024, this program facilitated the use of over 19,000 beverages in reusable cups and 176,000 food servings on trays across 97 stores in Mexico City, reducing reliance on single-use materials.
Nationally, Starbucks has encouraged the use of personal tumblers and cups since 2021 by offering an MX$8 (US$0.39) discount per beverage. This initiative has resulted in over 12.6 million drinks being served in reusable containers. In 2024 alone, it helped prevent waste equivalent to 5.05 million single-use cups.
"At Starbucks México, small actions can drive significant change. These initiatives reflect our commitment to the planet, and we are excited to see both employees and customers join in building a more sustainable future," says Sarai Jiménez, Director of Reputation and Sustainability, Alsea-Starbucks.
