The government of Tlaxcala reaffirmed its partnership with Mexico’s Food Bank Network (BAMX) this week, advancing its goal to expand access to quality food for vulnerable families in the state. Governor Lorena Cuéllar confirmed the commitment during a working visit to BAMX’s facility in Puebla, which serves as a model for the system being implemented in Tlaxcala.

The partnership is part of a broader strategy to promote food self-sufficiency and reduce post-harvest and general food waste, using a coordinated donation and distribution model. The BAMX program collects surplus food from supermarkets, agricultural producers, and companies, classifies it, and redistributes it to low-income communities. “This project promotes food self-sufficiency and reduces waste, while ensuring that food reaches those who need it most,” Cuéllar said.

Since the start of the collaboration, the organization has recovered 400t of food from farms for consumption in Tlaxcala, which is double the initial target of 200t. According to José Miguel Rojas, Director General, BAMX Puebla, the collected products possess the highest quality due to their freshness, which has contributed to surpassing the program’s original recovery goals.

The initiative relies heavily on volunteer work from corporate teams, students, civil society members, and local businesses. The government’s involvement has been formalized through collaboration agreements signed between 2023 and 2025, designed to improve coordination and long-term impact.
