3M Mexico, a subsidiary of the US-based conglomerate 3M, is increasing its investments in innovation to strengthen its position as a manufacturing and export hub for Latin America. “Innovation investments never stop, and they are not only for developing new products but also for improving production processes and integrating new technologies,” said Javier Lostao, Business Director, Consumer Group, 3M Mexico.

Lostao emphasized that one of the company’s goals is for new products to account for at least 15% of total sales. This year, the division expects to launch 75 new products within its Consumer segment, which generates annual sales of approximately US$500 million. “Focusing on new products helps accelerate growth, independent of the broader economic context. This aligns with the vision from our global management,” he added.

Mexico hosts three 3M plants—in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua; Ensenada, Baja California; and San Luis Potosi. Approximately 40% of Consumer products are sold domestically, while 60% are exported throughout Latin America. Lostao highlighted that the company aims to expand exports within the region rather than seeking new markets outside it.

3M also provides solutions for the automotive and aerospace industries. In the automotive sector, the company offers lightweight materials and high-performance adhesives designed to replace traditional screws and fasteners, with a particular focus on electric vehicles, although these solutions can be applied across most vehicle types.

In aerospace, 3M supplies advanced tapes, adhesives, and protective solutions to enhance aircraft durability and streamline maintenance processes. Its offerings include industrial-grade repair tapes for composite materials, structural adhesive films for metal and honeycomb assemblies, and polyurethane protective tapes to resist erosion and impact on critical surfaces. These products support the aerospace industry’s objectives of improving safety, reducing weight, and optimizing repair efficiency.

Mexico is a strategic center for both production and innovation. Lostao stated, “Mexico is not just a source of revenue; it has become a hub for innovation and development. Here we analyze products, adapt them for local markets, and prepare them for launch.” The company also prioritizes local suppliers to ensure quality and accelerate product development.

Sustainability is embedded across 3M’s operations. “Every product includes an element of sustainability,” Lostao explained. The company follows a circular technology model to enhance efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and incorporate recycled materials. Between 5% and 40% of production waste is reintegrated into manufacturing processes. The transition to recycled packaging and reduced plastic usage is ongoing.

The company’s Mexico-based Innovation Center serves as an interactive space for clients, partners, and users to experience the benefits of 3M products firsthand. It focuses on adapting global technologies to local consumer needs, from sponges designed to remove tough residue in traditional cookware to more accessible versions of premium products.
