ANPACT to Increase Women’s Participation in Transport Industry

 The National Association of Buses, Trucks and Tractor Trucks (ANPACT) launched the “MujerEsAutotransporte” platform to shine a light on women’s role in the automotive and trucking industries and work towards gender equality in Mexico.

“We are convinced that the first step to face challenges and find solutions is the creation of a space in which we can understand them deeply and generate a space of respectful, intelligent and informed dialogue. This is the reason why we have created MujerEsAutotransporte, where women and men will share the objective of being gender equality promoters in the trucking industry,” said Virgina Olalde, Global Trade and Economic Affairs Director, ANPACT.

Of the total women working in the transportation industry, only 11.4 percent work in the trucking industry, according to INEGI. Although women’s participation in the sector is low, those involved in trucking often have a higher level of education, with 37.3 percent of female truckers having higher education in comparison to 8.9 percent of men. However, only 2.5 percent of women in the trucking industry report receiving training in the field versus 70 percent of men.

With the MujerEsAutotransporte initiative, ANPACT will spearhead actions in favor of gender equality in the heavy vehicle production and trucking industries. It also aims to boost gender equality in the Mexican logistics value chain. The project will also monitor women’s participation in the industry and will offer a space of dialogue regarding equality. As part of the project’s first stage, ANPACT invites women to register and contribute with proposals to achieve inclusion in the sector.

“The increasing participation of women in the automotive and trucking industries is a reality. Nonetheless, in ANPACT we believe that there is still much to be done,” said Olalde.

The platform is one of the many efforts implemented by ANPACT to support equality within the sector. In 2021, ANPACT signed the UN Global Compact to empower women in the workplace through the implementation of its seven principles. On Mar. 14, 2022 ANPACT received the Orange Distinctive for Equality in Enterprises 2022-2023 from the State of Mexico government. 

“Receiving the Orange Distinctive is valuable for the association because it has helped us highlight the efforts that have been implemented in ANPACT in favor of gender equality and strengthens our commitment of creating better opportunities for women in the sector,” said Olalde.
