APTIV Opens Sixth Plant in Nuevo Laredo

Irish automotive supplier APTIV inaugurated its third assembly plant in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, which represented a US$52.3 million investment and will create over 2,517 jobs. This is APTIV’s sixth plant in Tamaulipas and its 30th plant in Mexico. The company aims to reach 8,000 jobs just in Nuevo Laredo. 

“This important investment is not a coincidence but a merit for Nuevo Laredo. Plants here have been winning internal production awards for three consecutive years; this is the result of the great performance they have shown,” said Arturo Álvarez, Chairman, APTIV Latin America.

APTIV manufactures wiring and harnesses for diverse types of vehicles. With this new plant, APTIV aims to manufacture 2.47 million pieces annually exclusively for the US market, which will be assembled into 1.10 million vehicles. 

“Only together, society, levels of government and private initiatives, will we be able to move at a faster pace to receive better results; this opening in Nuevo Laredo is a bet for all of Mexico that will drive important economic growth,” said Mexico’s Minister of Economy Tatiana Clouthier. She also highlighted the company’s commitment with diversity and inclusion as 55 percent of APTIV’s labor force are women. Clouthier, the Minister of Economic Development of Tamaulipas Carlos García Gonzáles and Mayor of Nuevo Laredo Carmen Lilia attended the plant’s inauguration.

The company is working in 46 countries, has 190,000 employees and 12 technical centers. APTIV has 127 manufacturing facilities, many of them are in Mexico. Its stated goals include creating more connected, safer and greener vehicles. 

APTIV will also open a new plant in Coahuila, Saltillo, which will focus on producing electric harnesses for the automotive industry. The plan in Coahuila will represent an investment of US$14.7 million and 3,200 new jobs, as reported by MBN. APTIV is working with Coahuila’s education institutes, such as COBAC, CONALEP and CECyTECT, to prepare the future workers of this assembly plant. Miguel Riquelme, Governor of Coahuila, said that the location of this plant, in the region of Monclova and Frontera, is a critical point for reducing logistics costs and will provide the security, labor and infrastructure that the company is seeking.
