Audi Mexico announced that it produced 1 million cars on the verge of celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its San Jose Chiapa plant. The construction of the Audi plant marked a turning point in the automotive industry in Mexico, as it became the first premium vehicle production factory in the country.

The company announced the production of 1 million Audi Q5 units for the global market since the factory started operations in September 2016, which took a total of 1,245 days to complete. The Audi Q5 vehicles lines focused on resource efficiency, as Audi highlights it is committed to social sustainability and takes actions that benefit the region, explained the company via a press release.

"The San Jose Chiapa plant is an important part of our global production network and sets standards for our factory 360 strategy, especially in sustainability. The wastewater-free production, in particular, makes the site a role model within the Group," says Gerd Walker, Board Member Production and Logistics, Audi AG.

Audi Mexico has generated more than 5,000 direct jobs, a significantly higher figure than planned prior to its construction, and over 20,000 indirect jobs for new and existing suppliers. Audi highlighted that its involvement in the region has also produced a positive impact in Puebla.

The Audi plant operates with a deep commitment to the environment and to social and economic development, says the company. Audi Mexico highlighted that it has been recognized as a Socially Responsible Company for six consecutive years, thanks to its environmental protection efforts and support for the development of young people residing in San Jose Chiapa.

"We are very excited and proud to celebrate 10 years in San Jose Chiapa. We thank all the employees who have allowed us to write a "Success story in Mexico.” I congratulate everyone because their work is of world-class quality. We will continue with the passion and perfection that characterizes us to continue this success story, with a firm step towards the sustainability and electromobility future of our company," says Tarek Mashhour, CEO, Audi Mexico

Audi Mexico seeks to follow its parent company’s initiatives from Germany as well with its Mission: Zero, Audi's environmental program that aims for carbon-neutral production in all its plants worldwide by 2025. The San Jose Chiapa plant is at over 80% progress.

Audi Mexico recently announced the introduction of several innovative processes in Puebla as part of its decarbonization and resource-efficiency programs.  “Audi Mexico is a company that works with deep respect for our planet. At our plant in San José Chiapa, we produce the Audi Q5 with a clear focus: the reduction and efficient use of natural resources," says Tarek Mashhour, Executive President, Audi México, as reported by MBN. Workers at the plant also saw a historic wage increase recently.
