Premium German automaker Audi introduced a new compact electric vehicle on Monday in an effort to strengthen its presence at the entry level of the European market, counter intense competition from Chinese manufacturers, and revive declining global sales.

The introduction of the new Audi A2 e-tron comes as sales at the Volkswagen subsidiary have dropped for two consecutive years, falling 7% in the first half of 2026. The brand’s sales performance has been pressured by tightening competition in China and European market pressures, alongside broader trade headwinds including US tariffs.

"In Europe, we need compact and efficient cars for the future. Premium cannot just mean more, more power, more resources, it has to mean using resources more intelligently," Gernot Goellner, Chief Executive Officer, Audi, told reporters in Paris during the media unveiling at a two-century-old industrial building.

Strategic Market Positioning and Production

The new model serves as a modern revival of the early-2000s A2 nameplate and directly replaces the outgoing A1 hatchback and Q2 compact crossover in Audi's lineup. Positioned as an entry-level family vehicle rather than a secondary household car, the model is priced starting at £32,200 (US$43,520) in the UK.

Manufacturing will be anchored at Audi’s flagship plant in Ingolstadt, Germany, with initial customer deliveries scheduled to begin in December.

Addressing the competitive environment, Doellner emphasized the company's outlook: "We see priority and strength when it comes to electromobility."

The product rollout occurs against a backdrop of broader operational restructuring across parent company Volkswagen Group. Last week, Volkswagen’s supervisory board unanimously approved sweeping job cuts across its manufacturing network to offset factory overcapacity, foreign trade tariffs, and aggressive pricing pressure from Chinese EV manufacturers.

The restructuring places pressure on domestic German facilities, including Audi’s factory in Neckarsulm, south-west Germany—one of four Volkswagen Group plants facing potential closure post-2030.

"We have to review what we are doing in Neckarsulm right now," Doellner said, noting that no new vehicle models have been allocated to the Neckarsulm facility past 2034. He added that executive management will work alongside labor and union representatives "to find measures to optimize the factory."

Efficiency, Engineering, and Powertrain Specs

Audi claims the A2 e-tron is the most efficient production vehicle in the brand's history. When fitted with an optional efficiency package, the 187-hp variant achieves an energy consumption rate of 12.8 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per 100 km (or 4.8 miles per kWh under WLTP testing cycles). Top-tier battery configurations offer a maximum driving range of up to 646 km (401 miles).

The vehicle is built upon a modified iteration of Volkswagen Group’s MEB modular electric drive platform. The lineup features rear-wheel-drive configurations across all variants, eschewing Audi’s traditional quattro all-wheel-drive system. Four powertrain outputs are offered, ranging from 167 horsepower to a peak 322 horsepower variant capable of accelerating from 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds.

Three battery capacities are available depending on trim:

  • 52 kWh Gross Capacity: Employs Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) chemistry, offering lower production costs without cobalt dependencies.
  • 61 kWh Gross Capacity: Also utilizes LFP chemistry.
  • 84 kWh Gross Capacity: Features Nickel Manganese Cobalt (NMC) chemistry, offering higher energy density and a maximum DC fast-charging capacity of up to 183 kW.

Aerodynamic optimization forms the core of the vehicle's efficiency strategy. The body architecture achieves a drag coefficient of 0.24, supported by short front and rear overhangs, a lozenge-style body silhouette, a split rear window, flush electric door handles, smooth underfloor aerodynamic transitions, and dedicated wheel arch gap reducers. Wheel sizes range from 18 to 20 inches, fitted with high-pressure, low-rolling-resistance tires measuring 225mm to 235mm in width.

To further reduce energy consumption, Audi incorporated updated permanent-magnet synchronous electric motors (designated APP350 and APP550). The units feature mechanical modifications including low-viscosity lubrication oil, highly polished gearbox spurs, and advanced stator and rotor components.

Interior Engineering and Vehicle Technology

The cabin design adheres to a streamlined corporate philosophy initiated by Doellner to reduce production complexity.

Interior highlights and functional specifications include:

  • Materials: Dashboard and door panels feature "Softwrap," a post-consumer recycled fabric, paired with lower interior paneling.
  • Storage and Ergonomic Layout: Integrated double wireless smartphone charging pad (25-watt output) equipped with cooling fans and magnetic retainers. The A2 is the first production vehicle to adopt the "Fidlock" magnetic-mechanical mounting system for interior accessories.
  • Displays & Software: Panoramic MMI digital architecture integrating an 11.9-inch instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch curved central touchscreen. The infotainment platform supports voice activation, artificial intelligence tools, and enterprise productivity apps including Microsoft Outlook and Teams.
  • Audio & Acoustics: Available 14-speaker, 660-watt Sonos premium audio system with custom tailgate weather-strip seals to suppress aerodynamic wind noise.
  • Dimensions & Cargo: Rear boot capacity provides 396 liters of luggage space, expanding to 1,336 liters with the rear passenger seats folded flat.
  • Electrical Integration: Supports bidirectional charging and Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capabilities to power external equipment or feed power back into domestic energy grids.

Driver assistance packages include adaptive cruise assist with active lane guidance operating at speeds up to 130 mph, automated traffic light stopping capability, park assist, and variable-ratio linear steering available via an optional Tech Plus upgrade package.
