BMW to Sell 7 Million Green Vehicles by 2030.

As part of its 10-year plan for sustainability, BMW Group has one of the world's widest selection of premium electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids. The German group, which includes BMW and MINI. expects to put more than 7 million of these vehicles on the road by 2030, two thirds of them being full-electric vehicles.

BMW and MINI's electrified and hybrid models are offered in 74 markets worldwide. Half a million vehicles with these technologies were sold in 2019. By the end of 2021, the company expects 1 million vehicles to reach the road. "Despite pandemic-related restrictions, more vehicles from the BMW Group were sold during the first half of 2020 than in the corresponding previous-year period," said the company on a statement.

According to IHS Markit’s New Registration July 2020 Report, electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids represent around 13.3 percent of BMW's total registrations in Europe, above the average 8 percent for all brands. The group expects the share to rise to 25 percent by 2021, to over 30 percent by 2025 and to 50 percent by 2030.

BMW Mexico will support the group’s ambitious goal toward sustainable mobility. After a successful first year operating in the country, the plant celebrated its 50,000 produced-units milestone and announced the production of plug-in hybrid vehicles. "At BMW Group, we continue to boost the electrification strategy for our product portfolio. San Luis Potosi plant will contribute to this strategy with the production of the first plug-in hybrid unit since we are aware electromobility will play a key role in the transformation of the automotive industry," said Jörg Willimayer, President & CEO of BMW Group San Luis Potosi Plant. The plug-in hybrid model to be produced in San Luis Potosi is BMW 330e sedan.

A local newspaper from the San Luis Potosi area reports that automotive experts expect BMW to relocate suppliers for plug-in hybrid vehicles production lines. The Minister of Economic Development of San Luis Potosi Gustavo Puente told Mexico Business News that by the time BMW announced its intentions to build a new plant, 110 new companies or expansions had taken place already. "In eight years, the industry grew the same amount it did in 38 years," he said. Should this phenomenon replicate, the area will be obligated to adapt to new requirements.

As BMW carries on with its ambitious sustainability strategy, it also announced that further series models will be electrified and build on a single production line. Current electric models include BMW iX3, BMW i3 and MINI Cooper SE. Upcoming fully-electric models are BMW i4 and BMW iNEXT, which are expected for 2021. Regarding plug-in hybrid models, new additions include the BMW X1, X2, X3 and X5, among others.
