BMW will begin producing the second generation of the M2 exclusively at its San Luis Potosi plant in late 2022. The plant currently produces the BMW Series 3 and the BMW Series 2 Coupé.

“We are very enthusiastic about being part of the celebration of the 50th anniversary of M now that our Mexican plant will produce M vehicles for the world. By exclusively producing the second generation of the BMW M2 for the global market, we are demonstrating once again the high capacity of the human talent in San Luis Potosi. Also, our commitment to the growth and development of the state is renewed,” said Hararld Gottsche, President and CEO, BMW Group San Luis Potosi plant.

Two other facilities in Germany and one in the US will also produce M models. The BMW M2 model is BMW’s most sold vehicle in the M category and the brand claims that the second generation will exceed consumers expectations.

The San Luis Potosi plant aims to be the group’s first carbon neutral plant. All of the electricity used within the facility originates from renewable energies. The plant is the first one among the BMW group to completely eliminate water use during the recovery of paint waste. The plant aims to expand its water treatment plant to increase its capacity to treat and reuse water during 2022. Currently, the plant has 3,000 employees.

“San Luis Potosi benefits from the experience and the best practices of the BMW Group Global Production Network. It is sustainable, innovative and highly flexible. Our highly motivated and qualified team is integrating this new model seamlessly into its ongoing production,” said Milan Nedeljkovic, Member of the Board of Directors, BMW AG.

San Luis Potosi has plants from major players such as BMW and General Motors and 233 auto parts companies, making it one of the most important states for Mexico’s automotive industry. For this reason, companies of the sector are continuously showing interest in expanding in the region. For example, Toyota’s steering systems supplier JTEKT Corporation continues to grow its operations in San Luis Potosi through an expansion that involved a US$50 million investment and has already generated 170 new jobs.

Due to its importance, San Luis Potosi keeps attracting international attention. Last week, US Deputy Secretary of Labor Julie Su visited San Luis Potosi to meet with the main actors behind the state’s Labor Reform, as reported by MBN.
