Covestro and BYD Form Strategic Alliance for Next-Gen EV Tech

German materials manufacturer Covestro and Chinese vehicle and battery producer BYD have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a long-term strategic alliance focused on developing and applying advanced material solutions for new energy vehicles, battery systems, energy storage, and next-generation technologies.
The agreement expands the relationship between the two companies beyond traditional supplier-customer purchasing into broader value-chain integration. Under the framework, the companies will engage in joint R&D projects, technological co-development, and the exploration of strategic investment opportunities. The scope of the alliance spans new energy vehicles (NEVs), power batteries, public transit systems, residential and stationary energy storage, and emerging technology applications.
The partnership comes amid rapid growth in global transport electrification. According to data from the International Energy Agency (IEA), one out of every four vehicles sold globally is now electric. This market shift is accelerating demand for lightweight, sustainable, and high-performance materials engineered to meet complex thermal, structural, and efficiency demands.
Under the terms of the memorandum, Covestro will supply specialized research and development capabilities, technical support, early access to material innovations, and large-scale manufacturing capacity. BYD will integrate Covestro into the early design phases of new projects and align the supplier with technological roadmaps across its various business divisions.
In the automotive sector, Covestro will utilize its multi-decade development history with polycarbonate and polyurethane materials. The materials will be targeted toward vehicle lighting systems, high-end interior and exterior trim, and smart electronic components designed to combine functional performance, structural integrity, and aesthetic design for smart mobility applications.
For power batteries and energy storage, the two companies will collaborate on lightweight, high-performance materials designed to optimize safety, thermal management, and cost efficiency. These developments will target electric vehicle battery packs as well as stationary residential energy storage systems.
The agreement further encompasses advanced polymer solutions for next-generation technology platforms, targeting requirements for lightweight construction, structural durability, thermal and electrical insulation, and mechanical performance under complex operating conditions.
Additionally, both companies committed to implementing low-carbon and circular material solutions to diminish the environmental footprint of mobility and energy infrastructure. Covestro will promote materials bearing its CQ (Circular Intelligence) designation, which are manufactured using at least 25% alternative raw materials. The effort supports Covestro's global "Sustainable Future" strategy, which prioritizes resource efficiency, circular economy integration, and environmental footprint reduction.
